An unfinished errand
Nell had gone to the shelter to collect a forgotten tackle box. Eli came along because he said an errand was more efficient with company, a claim unsupported by most of their shared history. The shower caught them halfway back. They waited under the awning while Pip investigated a dry patch beneath the bench.
A colour without a name
The cloud thinned near the horizon and light entered below it. The bay became a colour Nell could only describe as the inside of a shell. Eli called it pink. She said that was technically correct and completely inadequate. They watched the last rain fall through the warm light, each drop briefly visible before it joined the water.
The thing they forgot
When they finally returned to the workshop, the tackle box was still under the shelter bench. Eli pointed out that the original errand remained available for another day. Nell added a line to the log about the colour, then left a blank space where its name should have been. Pip slept through the discussion, having completed his own much clearer objective.
